2020 Dance Competition at KASF

Kingdom Arts & Sciences Festival 2020 — March 7th, 2020 — Matthews, NC

The Atlantian Academie of Dance sponsored a video-based dance competition at KASF 2020 — allowing groups from across the kingdom to participate regardless of location. Videos and documents were due to Nicolosa by Sunday, March 1st, 2020.

Announcement sent to the Academie on September 1, 2019, by Lady Nicolosa d'Isenfir (Kendra Schmid), Chancellor of the Atlantian Academie of Dance.

Competition One: Period Documentable Dance

Select a period documentable dance — anything commonly accepted in period (Playford, Domenico, Gresley, Caroso, etc.) — write a short informational document, and submit a video performance. A representative was encouraged to briefly introduce the dance, its history, and interpretation so viewers could learn alongside watching.

Competition Two: New Choreography

Create new choreography in the style of a period dance. This is the chance to put the “Creative” in Society for Creative Anachronism. Like Competition One, this involved writing a short document about the creation of the dance and the style it is based upon. You did not need to write new music, though novel music in the style of the period was warmly welcomed.

Rules for Both Competitions

Judging

Three judges — familiar with dance and music but not participating with any competing group — evaluated entries using an adaptation of the Performing Arts competition rubric. Prizes included bragging rights, chocolate, and other fabulous gifts.
